Multimeter tutorial and video

- a tutorial and video of how to use a multimeter or DMM giving the basics of test meters or multimeters and how to use them.

This test meter tutorial is split into several pages:

[1] Analogue multimeter
[2] DMM digital multimeter
[3] Basic instructions on how to use a multimeter
[4] Multimeter tutorial and video
[5] Making a multimeter voltage measurement
[6] How to measure current with a multimeter
[7] Making a multimeter resistance measurement
[8] Simple diode and transistor test
[9] Testing and fault finding a transistor circuit

A multimeter is one of the most useful items of electronics test equipment. A multimeter can be used to test a many of electrical and electronics items both for the homeowner and D-I-Y enthusiast as well as the electronics or radio hobbyist. Naturally, too, multimeters are widely used in the electronics industry as a useful and versatile item of test equipment.

Multimeter functions

Multimeters can test a variety of parameters in electrical and electronics circuits. Over the years they have become more versatile, but the basic measurements they can make include:

  1. Current

  2. Voltage

  3. Resistance

Although these basic measurements are the most widely sued, with the advance of electronics technology, many digital multimeters are able to make many more measurements. These may include some of the following:

  1. Temperature

  2. Continuity - some digital meters may provide a buzzer for this

  3. Capacitance

  4. Frequency

  5. Transistor test

  6. Capacitance

Video is about ten minutes long

Remember to read other multimeter tutorial pages on this website

As can be seen from the multimeter tutorial video, these test meters can be used for a wide variety of measurements, and they are an essential tool for any electronics enthusiast, technician or engineer. They are usually comparatively cheap to buy and they offer great value for money when considering the accuracy and features they offer.
